American Mathematics Competition Winners
Put on by the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC) is a nation-wide contest for sixth, seventh and eighth graders (as well as advanced fourth and fifth graders). The test consists of 25 multiple questions and is handed out by participating schools on a pre-arranged date. Students are allotted 40 minutes to complete the exam, and topics include probability, reading and interpreting graphs, estimation, and other math concepts. Students with perfect scores are honored with the National Award. High-scoring students from each state receive plaques, and schools also receive recognition for high scores.
There is also the AMC 10 and the AMC 12 (both for high school students - the first is for ninth and tenth graders, while the second is for 11th and 12th graders). AMC 12 students ranking in the top five percent and AMC 10 students in the top one percent nationally qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). The top 250 students from the Invitational are qualified for the American Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), and the top six go to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
The Web site even offers special tips and resources for students looking to score big on the test. The AMC sends out enrollment information to all U.S. middle and high schools, so check to see if your school is a participant.
