The next time you find yourself stumped by numbers, from arithmetic to algorithms, check out Wolfram|Alpha. This new Web site operates like a search engine, except that it relies on its own internal knowledge base, rather than the Internet, to generate output to any question entered. Computations range from the complex to the simple, and also cover questions about physics, chemistry, history, people, time and much more. Enter your birthday in the search field, for example, and Wolfram|Alpha will tell you how old you are to the day as well as notable events that happened that day and the phase of the moon. The site is in its beginning stages and may not have the answers to all of your questions yet, but it's a great starting point, and founder Stephen Wolfram says the information base is still being expanded.
